Syrian Refugee Appeal:  The World Federation prepares to deliver 1,000 food baskets and non-food items in Turkey

Updated 6 May 2014

In February 2014, UNHCR (the UN refugee agency) reported that more than 20,000 Syrian refugees arrived in Turkey since the start of the year. This represents the largest influx since early 2013. Since then, about 500 people have been arriving daily seeking refuge from the fighting taking place in Northern Syria.

The SYRIAN REFUGEE APPEAL aims to provide humanitarian aid to refugee families in the wake of the civil war. Through consultation with local partners and volunteers in both Lebanon and Turkey, The World Federation has learned that the most pressing areas of need among these refugee families include food and nutrition, and essential non-food items.
Turkey is providing assistance to Syrian refugees in 17 camps across eight provinces close to the Syrian border. With the growing number of refugees inhabiting these camps, there is an increasing need for the international community to come together to support the humanitarian assistance so desperately needed.

Refugees are struggling to purchase food and essential household items and do not have access to health care. Most families are comprised only of women and children, and there are many vulnerable individuals among refugee families, including unaccompanied minors, pregnant and lactating women, handicapped individuals, widows, and the elderly.

There is also evidence of significant psychological trauma among the refugee community. Many tell stories of fleeing for fear of abuse or torture and they talk of lost relatives, destroyed homes, and little or nothing to which to return to.

The World Federation has partnered with an agency to assist refugee families based in camps in Hatay, Turkey by providing them with 1,000 food baskets and non-food items (including food vouchers, family hygiene kits, kitchen sets, baby supplies and clothes). Volunteers are hard at work preparing these aid kits for distribution. It is our hope that these aid items will help alleviate some of their worries. As soon as these packs are ready, volunteers will begin delivering them to families.
