There are several scholarship opportunities available for individuals interested in studying in the UK. 


The Commonwealth Scholarship & Fellowship Plan

The Commonwealth Scholarship & Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is a programme whereby Commonwealth countries offer education and training opportunities to each other’s citizens. Since their inception in 1959, approximately 26,000 individuals have benefited from this programme to pursue advanced academic study. About 2/3 of the awards have been tenable in the UK.

In 2009, 71 UK based universities supported the scholarship by contributing the stipend for the students from their own resources or from other resources. Programmes and prospectuses also exist for individuals in mid-career fellowships and wanting to learn by distance learning on a shared funding basis, are offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). Queen Mary LL.M. Scholarship Opportunities for 2010-2011

Queen Mary, University of London's (QMUL) School of Law, comprising the Department of Law and the Centre for Commercial Studies (CCLS), has just announced the following scholarships for students enrolling for the 2010-2011 academic year:

Department of Law Scholarships: 4 Scholarships are available to UK/EU students and 2 scholarships to Non-EU students in various specialisations

Centre for Commercial Law Studies Scholarships: 3 scholarships are available to UK/EU students and 3 scholarships to Non-EU students Commercial Law subjects under a General LL.M. Other specialisation also are available

In addition, the School of Law will be offering six partial scholarships worth up to £2,000 for international students from the African continent, China, India, South America, and Thailand. These "Opportunities in Law Scholarships" will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Deadline for scholarship programmes is 14 May 2010.

For UK students taking an undergraduate course and not entitled to a scholarship, Queen Mary University offers Bursaries which will be awarded depending on the household income.

University of Exeter

Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Arts Languages and Literatures

The University of Exeter is ranked 9th out of more than 100 UK universities in the Times league table. It was the 2007/08 Times Higher Education University of the Year. PhD opportunities:

The University of Exeter will be awarding funding for over 100 new PhD places for 2010.

There are opportunities for PhD research in the sciences, social sciences and humanities across the University’s campuses in Exeter and Cornwall.
The awards range from full studentships covering all fees and a maintenance grant for three years, to bursaries worth £7,000 a year for three years. All positions will start in autumn 2010.

UCL Overseas Research Scholarships in MPhil/PhD or EngD

The UCL Overseas Research Scholarships (UCL-ORS) aim to attract high-quality international students to UCL to undertake research.

Approximately 40 Overseas Research Scholarships are available annually.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be:

  • Admitted to or currently registered at UCL for full- or part-time MPhil/PhD or EngD research
  • Liable to pay tuition fees as the overseas rate (overseas fees status)
  • Holding or expecting to achieve at least a UK 2.1 Honours undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification

Selection Criteria

Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence and research potential. Financial circumstances are not taken into account.

The University of Manchester

Undergraduate Scholarships for UK Students

All new UK undergraduates admitted by the School of Mathematics to a Single Honours Degree, who achieve three A grades at A-level including Mathematics, will be awarded a School Scholarship of £250 per year of study, and £500 per year of study for those who achieve three A grades at A-level including both Mathematics and Further Mathematics, irrespective of whether the course is three or four years.

Other scholarships and bursaries

In addition to the entrance scholarships above, The University of Manchester has a wide range of other awards designed to reward high achievement and to provide financial help for those who might otherwise decide not to proceed to university. Worthy of mention among these awards are:

  • Manchester Advantage Scholarships worth £3,000 per year for gifted students from households with income below a certain threshold
  • Manchester Guarantee Bursaries worth £1,250 per year for any student from a low-income household
  • Sports Scholarships for those with a high level of sporting talent

Undergraduate Overseas Scholarships

For 2010, the School of Mathematics is offering 3 types of Scholarship for International Students, who would be eligible to receive £2,000 or £4,000 for each year of their studies in the School of Mathematics.

The 3 types of Scholarships are as follows:-
 
International Mathematics Scholarship

The School has a large number of these International Mathematics Scholarships, which are worth £2,000 per year of study. All new international students who satisfy the mathematical component of their entrance requirement will be awarded such a scholarship.

International Actuarial Science Excellence Scholarship

These awards are for international students on the BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science and Mathematics degree (UCAS code NG31). Three of the awards are specifically for applicants from Africa, China and South East Asia and two more will be open to any international student.

International Mathematical Excellence Scholarship

These awards are for international students admitted by the School of Mathematics onto any undergraduate degree except the Actuarial Science and Mathematics programme. Five of these awards are specifically for applicants from Africa, China, India, Pakistan and Malaysia, and five more will be open to any international student.

The University of Edinburgh

Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (SORSAS) 2010

This scheme is designed to attract high quality research students. 30 scholarships are available for the year 2010-2011. The awards are open to overseas students undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of study. Each award covers the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses. Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years. All candidates who apply for a SORSAS Award and who are unsuccessful in obtaining an award, will automatically be considered for a University of Edinburgh Research Scholarship.

Application Procedure

Applicants should contact the College/School in which they intend to study and clarify their proposed research project. SORSAS is highly competitive and so if you are in any doubt whether you hold the required grades, please contact the relevant College/School before making an application.

Please note that you must apply for PhD admission before applying for a SORSAS Award. The SORSAS application cannot be considered until you have applied for postgraduate admission.

Aga Khan Foundation

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students, from developing countries, who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant and 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student.

The Foundation provides Scholarships to students who are from the following geographical areas:-

Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.
