Introduction
Surrey graduates appear to be the most employable of any UK university. No other university is able to match their consistently outstanding performance in jobs league tables. In 2000, nearly 99% of graduates found employment or further training within six months of leaving. The University offers links with over 500 companies to ensure it provides students with an education relevant to the latest needs of commerce and industry. They also pioneered the “sandwich “ degree programme, which allows the student to undertake a professional training placement as part of the degree.

The ”Language for All” Scheme
By registering with the European Language Teaching Centre in September the student will be assigned a weekly 2 hour class in a language of your choice starting from scratch (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese). The scheme is aimed at non-specialist learners and may be of particular interest to you if you intend spending some time abroad e.g. on a work placement.

The language courses are offered as an extra to pursue alongside your degree subjects and can lead to the award of the UniS Certificate in Foreign Language Proficiency.

All students can learn a language free of charge.

Professional Teaching
The Professional Training placement is the opportunity for you to spend 12 months working in industry, commerce or for professional bodies. It gives you an insight into your subject and career potential. Each school or department has a Professional Training Placement Tutor who works to secure placements. The tutors draw on a vast network of personal contacts in the UK and overseas. The exact timing of the placement may vary according to the special requirement of each degree programme, but in the majority of schools the placements occur during the third year of study.

The benefits to the student include:

  • The opportunity to travel overseas to earn and to enjoy a different way of living.

  • You can experience in a real-life working context, the degree subject you are studying without any long-term commitment.

  • The knowledge gained from your time in a professional environment to inform your final year project work.

  • On graduation you will be awarded a special Diploma, The Associate ship of the University of Surrey, for successful completion of professional training.

  • In many cases the training is recognised as a formal part of the requirements of the appropriate professional body.

Your employer upon graduation and/or sponsorship may also offer you a permanent position for your final year of study.

Location
Guildford is 29 miles southwest of London on the A3 London-Portsmouth road. By train, it is on the main line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth. Half hourly train services run from Guildford to Waterloo (35 minutes travelling time).

The University is built on a hillside leading up to Guildford Cathedral. Playing fields, gardens and a lake surround it. The campus is compact with academic, sports catering and entertainment facilities within easy walking distance of the majority of the courts of residence. Guildford is ten minutes walk away, a historic town with medieval buildings and a cobbled high street. A regular bus link runs between the campus, town centre and local leisure centre (Spectrum Leisure Centre offers ice-skating, swimming, athletics, basketball and ten-pin bowling).

Historic places nearby include Hampton Court and Windsor Castle.

International Students
The University attracts students from nearly every country in the world who contribute to its cosmopolitan atmosphere. 41% of students are of EU countries whilst 25% are from the Far East, 7% from Africa and 5% from the Middle East.

The Students Union has a Travel Bureau which can assist with travel plans, providing special advice on overseas’ students travel arrangements. There are also over 20 societies for overseas students to participate in social affairs.

International Exchange Scheme
The University has exchange agreements with several universities in North America and Singapore. This allows British students to spend a semester or a full academic year at an overseas university provided that the required courses can be “matched”.

The English Language Institute
Before you start your degree, this Institute provides pre-sessional English courses throughout the year for international students who intend to undertake a degree here. The classes help improve your overall written, spoken and academic English. Each course is divided into 4-5 week modules. You can join just one or all of them.

Accommodation
All accommodation is self-catering and is arranged in groups of housing. All first year students are guaranteed a place in University accommodation. Second year students find their own place to live in the Guildford area, with the guidance and help of the Accommodation Office Staff. The University also owns and rents property in the area for student use.
