Mothers Day Dessert Frenzy – Orlando, USA
Updated 8 June 2009
In anticipation of the Wiladat of Bibi Fatema (AS), the Youth Sub-Committee (Girls Section) of Husseini Islamic Center (HIC) of Orlando organized a Mother’s Day Dessert Frenzy for all the mothers of the community. The following is a report by Sr. Fatema Sughra Jaffer, a member of HIC Youth Sub-Committee on the event: The minute I walked into the ladies side, I felt the jovial aura in the room. Grandmothers, mothers, daughters, and granddaughters were all together for this beautiful event. During the whole night of Mother's Day Dessert Frenzy, the air was full of laughter. This event really helped mothers and daughters spend quality time not only with each other, but with the rest of the aunties, that we daughters take as mothers. Not to my surprise, Mother's Day Dessert Frenzy was a beautiful success. It started off with laughter and ended with even more laughter. It also gave our grandmothers a chance to play along with the young generation, bond with them, and be a part of the games. We daughters were given a chance to make our bonds stronger with the grandmothers, which I enjoyed very much. The games were so much fun and it never got to the point where I wanted to talk to one of my friends. Honestly speaking, I just wanted to have more good laughs with my 'grandmother for the night' because let me tell you, my grandmother and I were having a wonderful time answering those trivia questions. The great part of the game was that we weren't allowed to choose our own grandmothers, giving every grandmother a chance to form a new bond with a youth of the community. The winners of that game were Sabira Juma and Tahera aunty. Congratulations! You guys make a wonderful team! I know for a fact that all of us girls enjoyed the time spent with our grandmothers. Oh, and you can't forget the "How well do you know your mom?" game. It really brought out the truth as to how well we know our moms. For that game; congratulations to Asiya Alloo and her mom for getting the highest score - an eight out of ten! Though the other girls did really well, but we still figured many of us don't know our mums well enough! But the great thing is, the game gave us all the challenge of getting to know the small details of our parent’s lives, better. And of course, the highlight of the night, the food! There was a great variety of desserts, hence the name of this event; Dessert Frenzy! It truly was frenzy! The pineapple punch was amazing; a 'youth officials first attempt'. There was definitely more; I can't forget about the ice cream pot plants, the chocolate fountain with strawberries and pretzels to dip, the cheesecakes, éclairs, cream puffs, and of course, the very trademark of our community; tea and coffee! Talking about food, we, the daughters, had a great opportunity to serve our grandmothers and mothers; a way of showing our appreciation. When we sit back and reflect on this event, we think of a true bonding moment with everybody in the community. It was as if we were in our own happy world, where there was a smile from eye to eye on every face, even the little ones. My biggest thanks go to the conductors of our girl's youth committee; for if it wasn't for them I wouldn't know what turmeric powder is in Gujarati.
