Book Review - Karbala: The Complete Picture

Updated 25 January 2012

Dr. Mahmood Datoo tells the story of the journey that the family of the Prophet made to end at their final destination in Karbala.  The book charters the course of history right back to the Prophet Ibrahim and describes the roots of the Bani Hashim family.  It gives an in-depth look at the events that transpired after the death of the Prophet (saw) right through the ruling of the three Caliphs through to Imam Ali.  It tracks the Imamate of Imam Hasan (as) and the difficulties Muawiya was giving at the time.  The book then goes onto the describe the series of events that lead to the shahadat of the 3rd Imam (as) in Karbala including Yazid’s rise to power, the situation in Kufa, and finally the Imam (as) being stopped in Karbala itslf.

The uniqueness of this book really stands out in the style in which it was written.  The author has written two books prior to this one, and the style is no different.  It gives all the facts concisely in bullet points allowing the reader to understand exactly what went on and paint a very clear mental image.  At the end of a chapter, the author went on to describe how that particular individual, for example Imam Ali (a.s.), influenced Imam Husein(a.s) and how the ideologies and rationale used were critical in all the decisions that the Imam made, whether minor or major.

The inclusion of maps is something that can be used to great effect throughout this book.  The author refers very often to the maps attached, giving the reader a visual conception of the Imam’s journey throughout.  It gives a clear breakdown of the family trees of the two main characters throughout this journey, the list of martyrs who sacrificed their lives in Karbala, and also a physical map of the journey that the Imam (a.s) made with his family and companions.

All in all, the book is an excellent read and gives a detailed analysis of the incredible journey of Imam Husein (a.s).  It starts right back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (a.s) right on to the horrific events that occurred in the court of Yazid.  The inclusion of maps along with the simplicity of the writing style helps in giving the reader a visual and simple view of the facts leading up to the event of Karbala.  A must read for all.
