The Curriculum Development team of the Madrasah Centre of Excellence (MCE) has recently released the Draft Curriculum Framework for Madrasah which was produced after a lengthy process of consensus and consultation with religious scholars, educationalists and madrasah teachers. A detailed review of the major curricula currently used by madaris globally was also carried out. A copy of the Framework document is being sent to teachers in each Madrasah in every region.

The next step is to hold consultation sessions in each region with representatives from Madaris in that region. The purpose of the consultation, which will be facilitated by the Curriculum Development (CD) team, will be threefold:
• To discuss the framework in detail and deal with any queries
• To obtain in-depth feedback from the attendees
• To agree the next steps
Following the first consultation session in Dubai, the second session took place at the Imambargah in Daressalaam on Sunday 9th February 2014. A total of 52 participants from 10 madaris in Africa attended the full-day programme. The workshop was also attended by Islamic scholars who included Shaykh Murtadha Alidina, Shaykh Noor, Shaikh Shahnawaz Mahdavi, Shaykh Riyaz Mukadam and Shaykh Ali Karmali. The quality of discussion was at a high level and it was in the true spirit of ‘consultation’. The interactive sessions during the day resulted in extremely useful feedback from the participants which in turn will help in preparing the final version of the curriculum framework.

The CD team also visited Husayni Madrasah Girls Section and held discussions about the curriculum with the teachers, administrators and students.
The workshop was graced with the presence of Dr Asgar Moledina (President of the World Federation), Alhaj Anverali Dharamsi (Chairman, Africa Federation, Alhaj Aunali Khalfan (Hon Secretary, Africa Federation), Alhaj Mohamed Hemani (Hon Treasurer, Africa Federation), Alhaj Kumail Manji (Asst Hon Secretary, Africa Federation) and Seyed Hassan Naqvi (Chairman, AFTAB).

In his address to the workshop participants, Dr Moledina emphasised the point that Tarbiyah of the children was as important as teaching them Islamic knowledge. Parents must play their role in the tripartite arrangement between teacher, parents and student in the madrasah.
Alhaj Anverali Dharamsi pledged AFED’s continuous support for MCE and made a commitment of Fifty Thousand US Dollars towards it.

Members of the CD team were Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi, Shaykh Safder Jaffer, Dr Bashir Datoo, brother Aly Nasser and Al-Haj Naushad Mehrali.
