‘It is not their flesh or their blood that reaches God. Rather, it is your God-wariness that reaches Him…’ (Holy Qur’an 22:37)
Qurbani means sacrifice. During the annual Hajj which takes place in the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world slaughter an animal – either a goat, a sheep, a cow or a camel - to replicate Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son Ismail, for the sake of God.
The practice of Qurbani dates back to the time when God ordered Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his only son, Ismail through a dream. In his love and devotion to God, Ibrahim followed his dream and moved to perform the sacrifice; however, God intervened at the last minute and replaced Ismail with a ram. Since then, the Qurbani of an animal is practiced by Muslims worldwide as a reminder of Ibrahim’s obedience to God.
On a more spiritual level, this act symbolizes the human being’s readiness to give up or detach from those obstacles within us that either weaken our faith or hold us back from moving towards Allah (swt). These obstacles may be an object, wealth, home, pride or even arrogance. This is a time for each one of us to reflect on what it is we need to give up to become better human beings.
QURBANI APPEAL 2013
The World Federation is now taking orders for goat Qurbanis to be performed on your behalf on the blessed occasion of Eid al Hajj. The Qurbanis will be arranged in Kenya, Tanzania and Sri Lanka where the meat will distributed among deserving families including widows and orphans. Most of these families are not able to afford meat and so it is not part of their regular diet. The Qurbani meat will provide them with nutritional benefits and link them to people around the world who are thinking of them during the Eid al Hajj celebration.
COST OF QURBANI
All Qurbani requests will be carried out on goats. However, The World Federation reserves the right to make any changes in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
