“When food prices rise sharply, families cope by pulling their kids out of school and eating cheaper, less nutritious food, which can have catastrophic life-long effects on the social, physical, and mental well being of millions of young people,” (World Bank Group)
According to the World Bank, in 2012, prices have risen across all the non-rice grains - wheat, corn and soybeans:
• Wheat prices are up over 50 percent since mid-June;
• The price for corn has risen more than 45 percent since mid-June; and
• Soybeans are up almost 30 percent since the beginning of June and up almost 60 percent since the end of last year.
In Sri Lanka, about 30% of the population lives on less than USD $2 a day. This is evidence that poverty still remains widespread here and continues to be a challenging problem.
On 13 June 2012, The World Federation through its Ramadhan Relief Fund began distributing food ration baskets to struggling families living in Nuwara Eliya and Ampara. Our agent reported:
“After the food distribution in Nuwara Eliya, we left for Ampara which took us five hours to get there. The time taken to travel from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya is four hours. Therefore, in all, we had to spend more than nine hours on the road. Though it was exhausting, it was worthwhile.”
