West Bengal is India’s fourth most populous state and the seventh most populous sub-national entity in the world with over 91 million inhabitants. Muslims make up about 25% of the population. Majority of the Shia Muslims here live below the poverty line.
In April 2012, members of The World Federation consisting of Asad Virani (manager of The World Federation’s India Office) and Muhsinbhai Dharamsi (Relief and Economic Development) visited West Bengal to assess the needs of the Shia community there.
As a result of their findings, The World Federation through its annual Ramadhan Relief Programme is coordinating efforts to provide both Sadaat and non-Sadaat families living in West Bengal with food ration baskets, Iftaars and cash gifts in the cities of Kolkata, Murshidabad, Purulia and Pandeswar.
Food parcels will consist of the following items which will feed a family of four for one month:
• Rice (15kg)
• Flour (10 kg)
• Lentils (3 kg)
• Sugar (3 kg)
• Oil (3 kg)
• Spices
• Sewai
A RICKSHAW PULLER
Mr. Imran is a rickshaw puller and hardly earns 100 Indian Rupees a day. He has six members in his family and he is the only earner. This Ramadhan, Mr. Imran and his family will benefit from the Ramadhan Relief Programme to give them some peace of mind from their ongoing financial worries.
