Bam Progress Update – August 2005

On 26 December 2003, a massive earthquake destroyed the city of Bam in Iran, killing 50,000 people and destroying most of the buildings including all educational establishments. On behalf of our community world wide, the World Federation is constructing an Educational Centre in Bam as part of the overall rebuilding of the educational infrastructure.

The Educational Centre is earmarked to be ready this year. The project is slightly behind schedule due in part to stringent building regulations ensuring secure re-building of the city.  However, with the main structure in place and the basement completed, what remains is the ground floor and finishing. The school administrators, under the Khatamul Ambiyya Foundation, are finalising the curriculum as well as conducting the admission process in tandem.  This will be amongst a select number of schools in Iran that will provide a modular course allowing both flexibility and innovation in the education process.

Bam Project Head, Councillor Mohsin Kanji said, “We are extremely pleased with the progress made.  Despite of a lot of rhetoric, progress in Bam in general has been slow, and the fact that our project will be amongst the first permanent structures post the earthquake tells you of the pace of progress; a lot of credit is due to the efforts on the ground especially by our Representative Syed MuhammadRidha Shustary.”
