The library in Bam |
The earthquake in Bam that occurred on 26th December 2003 destroyed all the libraries and books that were present in the city. A young journalist working for the Regional Television Network, Ms Azam Joshani was concerned that the time taken to reconstruct these libraries would be so long, that perhaps the reading habits of the Youth of the City would be lost forever.
Ms Joshani highlighted her concern to the World Federation President, Dr Ahmed Hassam and Bam Project Head, Councillor Mohsin Kanji after interviewing them for the Regional Network during the ground breaking ceremony of the World Federation project late last year.
Through her contacts as the Head of Bam's Quran and Nahjul Balagha Society for the Youth, Ms Joshani had amassed several hundred titles but lacked the facility to house the titles or to provide reading facilities. The World Federation felt this was a viable project and last year, a complete set of facilities including a library, reading room and washroom facilities in Bam town Centre was completed and handed over to this Bam Youth Society.

The library and reading room for the Bam Youth Society |
The prefabricated structure is vested in the Khatamul Ambiyya Foundation Trust with a 3 year renewable FOC lease granted to the Quran and Nahjul Balagha Society. During a recent visit to Bam by the World Federation Representative in Qum, Syed MuhammadRidha Shustary we found that apart from being a comfortable library and reading room, the facility also hosts Quran and Nahjul Balagha classes thrice a week.
