βThe economic situation in Sri Lanka is such that it is the disadvantaged who are badly affected. Due to the daily escalating cost of living, the bountiful packs that we distributed was more than a God send, it was definitely a Blessing in disguise. They were so thankful that they were unable to express their thanks, but wept, shedding tears of joy.β These were the sentiments expressed by our partner agency in Sri Lanka about the Ramadhan Relief funds they disbursed on behalf of The World Federation.
In Sri Lanka, relief was provided to 150 needy families in 14 towns. The following initiatives were carried out here:
- Distribution of Ramadhan Packs, new clothes and cash - all the recipients were able to fast during Ramadhan without a problem, since they had all the essential dry rations that they needed
- Iftaar was provided to groups of Muslims
- Before each distribution was made, the Az-Zahraa Association made it a point to talk about the importance of the Holy month of Ramadhan and the important events that took place during this Holy Month.
- Many individuals received assistance to re-build their homes that were damaged due to the recent floods. Most of the houses are built out of wood; therefore, the wood had perished due to the continuous rain. Assistance was also provided to fill up their houses with debris and earth, so that the rain water and flood waters would not get into their homes.

- Substantial assistance was provided to raise the level of the main road of one particular village (Duwa Watte) which was under water due to the recent floods, to enable the people to go to work and the children to go to school.
- A few families (especially widows) were also assisted in carrying out home industry projects like making paper bags, preparing food items etc.
- Sewing Machine motors were distributed to women who had sewing machines to enable them to sew their garments at a quicker pace, thereby increasing their income to a great extent.
Shan-E-Abbas Hassam, The Assistant Secretary General for Relief & Economic Development expressed his gratitude towards The World Federation's partners in Sri Lanka: 'We would like to thank the Az-Zahraa Association for their hard work. A significant section of our Shia community in Sri Lanka suffers from a great deal of deprivation, especially since the Tsunami and the more recent floods. We have much work to do, for their economic upliftment in the long term; and we will investigate initiatives with this in mind.'
