Multi Storey building collapses into Mosque compound – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Updated 29 March 2013

The World Federation was informed on the morning of Friday 29 March 2013 that a 16 storey building under construction and adjacent to the open area of the Dar Es Salaam Imambara had collapsed. Sadly, this took place when there were people including children in the compound. Initial reports suggest several people including construction workers, residents and children are missing and reports that there were three fatalities.  Sixteen people have been pulled out alive.

Although we are awaiting further details on the situation, we have been informed that the Dar es Salaam Jamaat & Africa Federation officials and volunteers from the community as well as the Tanzanian Police Force and Fire and Rescue are at the site of the accident and rescue efforts to pull people from under the rubble are under way. The World Federation President and the Secretary General are in constant touch with The Africa Federation and with the Dar Es Salaam Jamaat officers.

It is heartening to see that several people from the Dar es Salaam community, including professionals and non-professionals, Muslims and non-Muslims have come together with whatever equipment they have to assist in the rescue efforts.

There is a huge crane that is pulling massive iron bars to access the centre of the builing where it is thought that people who are alive.  Some are making calls to friends and relatives from under the collapse.

The World Federation asks the community to come together to pray for the quick rescue of those who are still trapped.  We pray for the safety of all people who have been harmed and those courageous individuals who are working on the rescue efforts, as well as the well-being of those affected.

The World Federation also offers its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims during these trying times.
