Remembering Mulla Asghar, by Dr Asgarali Moledina

The time has come again as we commemorate the sad demise of the iconic leader of our community: Mulla Asgharali M M Jaffer, whom we lost on 21 March 2000.

Mulla was that personality to whom I feel truly indebted. He was unique in that he combined amazing qualities in his expansive personality: he was religiously knowledgeable, and pious and God-aware; at the same time he possessed a statesman-like astuteness and such spoken flair; he has indeed left all those who have come after him with a goal as well as a problem: the goal is to emulate him, the problem is that he set the standard so high.

I often spend my spare time thinking about Mulla and the way he was able to lead the community, in good times and bad. The way he personally interacted with one and all, his enduring patience, and his resoluteness in the face of adversity.

However, one quality shines out for me above all: fear of God. What an amazing yet simple characteristic. He feared the repercussions of his actions and how he would answer God. This characteristic can make a person be more vigilant, careful, and firm on the right path. Nonsense and mischief will not tempt that person, and he will always be able to see the bigger picture. Mulla saw the bigger picture, and as a result he grew as an individual and a leader.

With my presidency entering its second term from May onwards inshallah, I pray to Allah to grant me the Tawfeeq to follow in the footsteps of our Imams, and the people they inspired such as Mulla Saheb and our other noble forefathers.

Let us remember them all with a Sura al-Fatiha.
