Salim Dossani (Chotubhai) – A leader Without a Title

Updated 27 March 2013

A tribute by Hasnain Walji – Past President of the World Federation

A couple of years ago, I was gifted a copy of the book by Robin Sharma called “of The Leader Who Had No Title’.  The core message of this outstanding book by Robin Sharma was that every single one of us has the opportunity to show leadership in our work and within our lives--every single day. That one does not necessarily have to have a Title and a Position to be considered a leader. In my decades of Community work, few people exemplify this notion of a Leader Who Had No Title as Marhum Salim bhai Rajabali Dossani fondly known to us all simply Chotubhai. To the best of my knowledge, he never held any title or position and yet he was always at the forefront when it came to serving the economic and religious needs of the Community. Indeed Chotubhai was an egoless leader and most notably a man passionate about making a difference. That's what we need most in the Community today.

His passing away is a tremendous loss to the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Community.  Chotubhai hailed from a family to whom public service cane naturally. His respected father Late Rajabali bhai Dosani served selflessly as the President of the Council of Gujarat in its formative years and continued his service until his last days a few years ago. Having been at Rajabali bhai’s funeral, attended by thousands of mourners form all across Gujarat revealed  how much  he had touched the Community in Ahmedabad and beyond. It this legacy that Chotubhai and his brothers continue unflinchingly.

I recall with fond memories the long drives that we undertook together not just in Gujarat but also in UP, Andra Pradesh and elsewhere in India with Marhum Mulla Saheb accompanied by the then senior Councilors Aunali Bhai Salemohamed and Mustafa Jaffer. Chotubhai, in his unassuming way saw to it personally that we were comfortable during and at the destination s as he drove us through the rough terrains and long distances in days when the road infrastructure was not as developed as it is today.  It is a tribute to these unsung heroes, who in the early days allowed us to be exposed to the plight of the Shia Community  in the hamlets and villages, so far form the Cities, who most needed the assistance and yet overlooked because of the distances.

The contribution of the Dossani family in Ahmedabad is well known and Chotubhai as the eldest of his siblings was an exemplary leader without a title.  The World Federation is blessed to have had Chotubhai as one of its passionate supporters and volunteers.
We pray for his maghferat. May Allah swt place him in the closest proximity of the Masumin (a.s.) The worldwide Khoja Community expresses its  heartfelt condolences to his family.
