Four Female Students awarded with Hiridjee Higher Education Family Loan in 2011

Updated 13 December 2011

The Hiridjee Family Loan was available to all female students of our community wishing to pursue higher education. The applicants were neither restricted to a particular course nor to a particular country or university. The loan was advertised in July 2011 in all constituent jamaats through leaflets, power point slides and newswires by The World Federation. Each applicant was entitled to apply for a maximum of Sterling Pounds 10,000 per academic year for up to three consecutive years through this loan.

A total of six applications were submitted by 15 August 2011 and an unbiased decision was taken on 29 August 2011 by the Loan Application Committee (LAC) Members, after going through all six loan applications.

Like with all loan applications that come through to The World Federation Education, emphasis was placed on the following three areas when coming to a decision:

  1. The grades of the applicant (Results of “O” Levels, “A” Levels and Madressa
  2. The level of community work that the applicant has carried out and evidence of voluntary work in their community/region etc
  3. The applicant genuinely requires the funds and does not come from a wealthy family and is deserving candidate.

The applicants awarded with the Hiridjee Higher Education Family Loan were

  • Zahra Bashir Damji from Birmingham: Studying LLB Law (undergraduate) at University of Birmingham.
  • Fatima Zahra Walji from Minnesota: Studying Korean Language and Cultural Education (Masters) at Korea University.
  • Fatima Zehra Dungersi from Mombasa: Studying BSc Neuroscience (Undergraduate) at Cedar Crest College in USA.
  • Samreen Fatima Amreliwala from Pakistan: Studying Pharmacy Honours (Masters) at Griffith University of Australia. Unfortunately the loan had been revoked from her due to placement problems in the university. Samreen was given an additional 3 month extension to secure an alternate offer to pursue her master which sadly did not materialise.

We would like to congratulate the applicants who have successfully secured the advertised loan and wish all applicants success in all future endeavours.

The World Federation would like to thank the Hiridjee Foundation for their continuous support towards higher education for female students. We pray to the Almighty to grant the family with ample of blessings through the Wasila of the fourteen infallibles.
