CoEJ-WF CPD on public speaking inspires follow up in Arusha

Updated 16 February 2010

The Council of European Jamaats with support from The World Federation ran a continuous personal development course (CPD) for upcoming Zakireen on the art of preparing and presenting a majlis. Akil Lalji of Arusha attended the CPD which was held in April 2009 in Milton Keynes, UK. Click here for further information

One of the key outcomes expected from the CPDs is that the participants will use the experience to promote the teachings of the course in their own localities. This was excellently displayed by Akil Lalji in Arusha who managed to hold a seminar to promote the teachings of the CPD.

Public Speaking Seminar in Arusha

On 10 January 2010, Bilal Muslim Mission Tanzania held a public speaking seminar at the Shia Centre.  Akil Lalji conducted the seminar and was assisted by Shaykh Maulid. Eleven mwalims from various centres throughout Arusha attended.  Each participant was requested t prepare two small lectures which would be presented throughout the day.  Each lecture was reviewed, recorded.

These recordings were then replayed and areas for improvement were discussed by the group.  Akil Lalji presented points on how public speaking should be conducted.  The response was enthusiastic as it brought new information and ideas to the reciters who have recited several majlis in the past.

During the afternoon session, the participants delivered their second lectures.  The presentations had marked differences in their delivery.  Participants were given review sheets where they tracked their peers’ progress.  These lectures were also recorded to give the participants an idea of the before and after of the seminar.  The participants also appreciated the feedback they received from their peers and Akil Lalji by Shaykh Maulid.

Shaykh Maulid suggested that more sessions such as these should be held on a regular basis and that it would also be beneficial for teachers.

The day was such a success, that mwalims are waiting for the next session so that they are able to participate as well.
