Experiences of a Madinah al-Ilm summer course student

Updated 2 March 2010

Naasirhussein Muhamedali of Dubai recalls his profound experiences as part of the Madinah al-Ilm summer course organised by Islamic Education.

For three years I had made the intention to attend and benefit from this wonderful course through The World Federation but I was prevented from attending due to my own circumstances.

Last year, in 2009, I was finally blessed with the opportunity to attend the course and pay my salutations to the 8th Imam (as) and Bibi Masuma e Qum (sa).

I learned many things on this trip which I did not know about Islamic concepts and teachings, from proving the existence of God, to how to ponder upon and reflect upon the messages of the Holy Quran. This was all possible through the support of the great teachers throughout the course. The feeling of being near such knowledgeable scholars and students of the hawza was amazing. The way they answered some of our questions and told us about their lifestyle, the hawza, and how they spend their time for Islam was very enlightening.

Every time we went to the holy shrines we felt a state of calmness within us and sometimes just sitting there without reciting anything was also beneficial and satisfying.

To visit Masjide Jamkaran gave me a tremendous feeling, and being surrounded by my fellow Muslims and reciting Dua e Tawassul was inspiring. I could feel from my heart the love of the twelfth Imam (aj). We were blessed to be able to visit the Masjid for two Tuesdays.

I still recall my first glance at the shrine of Bibi Masuma (sa). I cannot express the amount of joy I felt when going through the translation of the ziyarat and how helpful it was in understanding the status of that great lady.

On the way to visit the 8th Imam's holy shrine my heart was filled with excitement. Mashallah the haram was beautiful and huge. The devotion of the people was amazing; how far had they come to touch this zarih? I felt very humbled.

My advice to anyone who is able to go on this course is to spend the three weeks in Qum and Mashhad as part of the Madinah and Bab summer courses - it is truly a once in a lifetime, life-changing experience!
