Islamic Celebrations Display – Toronto, Canada

Updated 16 December 2008

On 6 December 2008, the 4th Annual Holidays event by York Regional Police (YRP) was held at Bruce’s Mill Community Safety Village, in the North side of Toronto. Every year, YRP hosts an open house to give the public an opportunity to come and experience holidays celebrated by various faith groups. The Tabligh Committee of the ISI Jamaat of Toronto was invited by YRP, and in particular Chief Armand La Barge to participate in this year’s event.

Alongside the Vishnu Temple, the followers of the KWANZA principles, and members from the Jewish Community, the Jaffari Islamic Centre displayed a presentation concentrated on the concept of Eid. One of the tables showcased how a Muslim family traditionally celebrates Eid; starting with Eid prayers, gift giving to the kids, meeting up with family and friends, and of course sharing delicious jalebis and samosas! Several short explanatory notes were put next to the display for people to peruse leisurely.

On the other side, as Muslims were soon to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, it was the perfect opportunity to put up a display on Hajj and its significance. The basis of Hajj was explained, starting with Prophet Abraham (AS), the father of the 3 Abrahamic faiths: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. One Shia Adhan clock, a beautiful picture depicting the congregation of millions of Muslims during Hajj, one miniature Rozo, along with several colourful tasbihs were among the items displayed.

Alhamdulillah, the event was very much appreciated by all, especially by the York Regional Police.

ISIJ of Toronto is producing a program called “Islam in Focus” which is being aired weekly every Saturday mornings at 10:00AM (EST). The “Islam in Focus” crew was also on site and covered the event, Alhamdulillah.

“Islam in Focus” is aired on the following networks:

  • Rogers 129
  • Bell Express Vu 217
  • Star Choice 348

All shows are also available through an online portal at www.jaffari.org

The Chief of Police of YRP, Chief Armand La Barge was also interviewed, and he expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation for all of the Committee’s efforts. He also thanked the Jaffari Islamic Centre and presented the Tabligh team with a certificate of participation.
