Madinah al Ilm Camp 2010 – A life changing journey

Updated 2 March 2011

August 2010 brought us to one of the most spectacular trips we had ever taken. Not knowing what to expect, 60 young men and women from all over the world embarked on a life changing journey – to Iran. It is truly difficult to put in words our invaluable experiences during this short but memorable trip.

During our stay in the holy city of Qum, we had the privilege of visiting the shrine of Bibi Fatima Ma’sooma (a.s), the thawab of her ziyarat is equivalent to the ziaarat of Bibi Fatima Zahra (a.s) as well as her esteemed brother our 8th holy Imam.  We were also provided with the opportunity to learn from renowned scholars including distinguished Ayatollahs and their representatives, and knowledgeable Sheikhs from different parts of the world.

What I looked forward to the most were the classes we had every morning. The knowledge that we gained from all three classes was practical and inspired in me the desire to learn more. In Akhlaq we learned the importance of knowing one’s self in order to be able to know our Lord as a means to increase our nearness to Him. Aqa’id taught us the importance of knowing the fundamental principles and the basis of our religion. In this class our critical thinking skills were tested through thought provoking discussions on theology of religion and society. Our third class, Qur’anic Principles, highlighted several significant recurring themes in the Holy Qur’an and how they apply to us. Discussions in this class occasionally led to other topics and we gained a lot of practical knowledge which we still refer to and hopefully apply in our lives.

My favorite part of the trip was the visit to Imam Khomeini’s shrine and Behisht-e-Zahra, the graveyard of the martyrs. It stirred many emotions and brought within me a realisation of what it means to be devoted to your religion and your country. It also put in perspective the coming of our twelfth Imam and our duty towards him not only in our actions but when the time comes actually supporting him. This concept was emphasised in a talk given to us by a veteran of the Iran – Iraq war. His speech was motivating and intriguing as he introduced us to a different perception of jihad and our obligation to our Imam.

The Madinatul Ilm summer course is a unique opportunity offering a combined trip with the performance of ziyarat, a taste of hawza studies and multiple excursions around Iran.  In terms of Islamic education, it was the beginning of a lifelong learning process and self building. The three weeks spent with individuals from around the world created lasting bonds of friendship and shaped our overall experience. I returned home with a renewed perception of religion and spiritual revival which truly enhanced my spiritual journey during the holy month of Ramadhan.
