WF Qum Office: Guidelines for Hawza Applications

Yet it is not for the faithful to go forth in masse. But why should not there go forth a group from each of their sections to become learned in religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware? (9:122)
The city of knowledge, Qum is the ideal place for those wanting to emulate the above verse. There are many Hawzas in the holy city of Qum where thousands of Ulama seek Islamic studies to ready themselves to preach the knowledge and guidance of the Ahlul Bayt (as).
Hawza Courses for Foreign Students There is one organisation that is responsible for foreign students of the Qum Hawza: Al-Mustafa International University. Al-Mustafa has branches in Mashhad, Isfahan, Gorgan and Qeshm.
Al-Mustafa offers a number of courses, including: • Post-high school diploma • Undergraduate Degree in Islamic Studies • Post-graduate degree in Islamic Studies • PhD opportunities
The programmes are based on standards set by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ministry of Sciences, Research and Technology, and degrees awarded from this ministry. WF Qum Office Facilitates Applications from Certain Countries The WF Qum Office has an excellent reputation in Qum and through its relationship with Al-Mustafa, is able to assist and facilitate Hawza applications from certain countries that has been agreed with Al-Mustafa.
Applicants from Germany, India, Madagascar, Pakistan, South Africa, and Tanzania Al-Mustafa has stipulated that applicants from the following countries must apply in their country of origin by contacting the relevant representatives (the below information has been provided by Al-Mustafa International University):

pa.rep@imam.miu.ac.ir | Once applicants from the above countries have applied and submitted their documents to the representative Office in these countries, they can then write to WF Qum Office to follow up the application. WF Qum Office will then pursue the application.
Note: WF Qum Office cannot assist in cases where an application has been rejected by Al-Mustafa.
Applications from Other Countries For applications from the rest of the world, the following procedure will apply (this is current as of 23 November 2011, and may be subject to change):

Step 1 |
Email WF Qum Office on qum@world-federation.org with a covering letter and with CV attached |

Step 2 |
WF Qum Office will assess the eligibility and personal details of the applicant, including:
a) Reasons for the application
b) Applicant should be aged between 17 and 24 years
c) Applicant should have a bachelors degree or equivalent
Note: In some circumstances, points (b) and (c) above are sometimes waived at the discretion of Al-Mustafa |

Step 3 |
Once WF Qum Office instructs, the documentation for enrolment should be submitted by email to WF Qum Office (qum@world-federation.org):
a) Scanned copy of valid passport
b) Recent passport sized photograph (photo must have been taken within the last 6 months)
c) Application form in Farsi
Note: If you are unable to have the form filled in Farsi, then WF Qum Office may be able to assist. However, this could significantly slow-down the progress of the application.
d) 2 references (references could be from Jamaat officials, Madrasah teachers / principals, resident Alim, Regional Federation etc.)
e) A copy of all educational degrees, certificates and awards
f) For female applicants: a letter from the father consenting to his daughter’s application, and the nomination of a guardian in Qum that will take responsibility for her
g) Any other supporting documents |

Step 4 |
WF Qum Office will then make the necessary arrangements to submit the application. The following steps may be undertaken by WF Qum Office:
a) Checking documentation
b) Requesting any missing information / document
c) Checking references
d) Conducting telephone interviews
If the above requirements are satisfied, the WF Qum Office will attach an official recommendation letter together with the application |

Step 5 |
Once the application is submitted, WF Qum Office will monitor the status of the application and will keep the applicant updated on the progress of the application by email |

Step 6 |
Once the application is successful, WF Qum Office will:
a) Inform the applicant the reference number of the Education visa
b) The applicant should inform the WF Qum Office of their arrival details (flight number, date, timings) so that Al-Mustafa can arrange pick-up from the airport |

Step 7 |
Once the applicant arrives in Qum, the support of WF Qum Office continues through advice and guidance in education, selection of tutors, selection of subjects and programmes, and providing assistance to settle down with regards to accommodation etc. |

Step 8 |
Thereafter, the WF Qum Office will continue to support students through many schemes such as stipends, social and communal gatherings, counselling, access to resources and much more. |

Current Students At present, there are almost 100 Khoja students both male and female, studying in Qum. Recently, WF Qum Office has welcomed 11 new Khoja students, some of whom were facilitated through the WF Qum Office.
