We regret to inform you of the sad demise of Marhum Jaffer Abdulhussein Tejani who passed away in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Wednesday,16 April 2014, 15 Jamaadi al Thaani 1435. The Marhum was buried there on the same day.. Mumineen are requested to remember the Marhum in their prayers.

In memory of marhum mwalimu Jaffer Tejani

With great sadness I write these memories of marhum Jaffer Tejani, to mark the passing away of a well-known ex-zanzibari scholar.
Marhum Jaffer Tejani was to me, first of all,a teacher and a great friend. He was a contemporary and a very good friend of my brothers
Issa Peera and marhum Peera Okera.
Marhum Jaffer Tejani was the first Zanzibar to gain a university degree in Arabic; from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies.
He started his teaching career at the Zanzibar Secondary School. In the afternoons, he coached English to community boys in Grade 8 of the Primary School. I was one of his pupils and he was instrumental in developing my early English writing skills.
Marhum then moved to Pemba to teach at the island's new secondary school. There he met his future wife Naseembai.
I came across marhum again at the University of Dar es Salaam in late 1960's and early 1970's. He was then in the University's Swahili Institute, with the worthy task of developing the Swahili Dictionary. We met again in Nairobi in late 1970's. He was then teaching at the Kenyatta University College. I lost contact with him when he moved on to Muscat and later back to Dar es Salaam.
I will always remember marhum as a close friend of the Peera Okera family.
He was an intellectual; had a deep sense of integrity and always ready to help people around him. He was quiet; gentle and highly respectful. He swam;played football and hockey.
I am sure he will be missed by many and especially by his wife Naseembai and daughter Nailabai. Our sincere condolences go to them. May Allah grant him rest and peace in eternity - Ameen.

On behalf of myself and my family, I send my most sincere condolences to the family of marhoom Jaffer Tejani on his passing away recently.

I remember in late 50's in Zanzibar marhoom used
to come to marhoom Agha Mahdi Shushtari in his shop for special Farsi language classes with particular interest in Farsi poetry, probably the Diwan of Hafiz or Bustan of Saadi.

With all his proficiency in languages, he remained humble, unassuming and unpretentious. A great pity that this son of the Khoja community, this gem, as far as I know did not seem to have received recognition nor utilized for his talents. May Allah(swt) place the marhoom in the proximiity of Ahlul Bayt(a.s.) (ameen).

As Salaam Alaikum. On behalf of my family please accept our sincere condolences. Jafferbhai was a close friend of our family and especially my father Marhoom Abdulrasul Mohammedali Khakoo from Zanzibar. They taught together and worked in the Zanzibar Jamaat along with Marhoom Hussein Nathoo. We are sorry for your loss and will continue to pray for him. May Allah Grace him with His Love and a place in jannat with our masoomeens.
