Ramadhan Relief 1431:  Surviving the fast on a glass of water in India

Updated 25 August 2010

Sabiha is a widow in India. Her husband, before he passed away, cleaned vehicles for a living. Now, she lives alone with her 3 children. Sabiha suffers from cardiac health complications and is undergoing treatment.

Whilst her children are struggling to educate their way out of the cycle of poverty, they have no source of income besides welfare support. Sabiha’s health problems confine her ability to work to feed her family.

In the month of Ramadhan, Sabiha’s children fast without having adequate Sehri. Since Iftaars are usually arranged at their local mosques and other centres, disadvantaged families like Sabiha’s are provided with sufficient meals during Iftaar.  However, since there are no arrangements for Sehri, most of these families, including Sabiha’s children, can only afford to have a glass of water for Sehri.

The World Federation’s Ramadhan Relief Fund ensures that Sabiha’s children and other needy families in India are provided with proper Iftaars and Sehris for the month of Ramadhan.

STRUGGLING IN INDIA
India’s poor and needy Muslims continue to live in cramped houses, under unhygienic conditions in congested localities. Most of the Muslims who receive aid through the Ramadhan Relief Fund live in rented accommodations with no luxuries such as drinking water, drainage and adequate sanitation facilities.

Usually there is one wage earner in the family who must work hard to feed an average family of 5 people. Often, this main family earner will fall sick, causing more hardships and worries for families to meet their basic needs. The most common illnesses among these workers are ulcers, tuberculosis, piles and respiratory problems. When these illnesses are prolonged, death will overtake them at an earlier age than anticipated, leaving behind young widows with young children.

RAMADHAN RELIEF IN INDIA
For over 20 years now, The World Federation of KSIMC works with a number of partners in India to bring respite to our needy sadaat and non-sadaat brothers and sisters there all year long. But in Ramadhan, we team up to work that much harder. Aid is provided to orphans, widows, deserted spouses, single women, the sick, the disabled, and the underprivileged among our community who are unable to earn income. There are thousands of individuals who cannot afford to eat one complete meal a day in the month of Ramadhan. These individuals, who often fast, seldom eat.

Through our agencies across India, we are able to help thousands of families by:

  • Giving out cash gifts so that they can have a healthy Sehri and Iftaar
  • Gifting clothes
  • Distributing food rations
  • Providing medical aid
