On 30 September 2009, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal city of Padang, levelling homes, mosques, and hotels. The death toll is already at 496 people and is expected to rise.
Padang has a population of around 900,000 and survivors are facing shortages of food, shelter, and clean water as rescuers are working to find thousands of pole who are still trapped under the aftermath of rubble and destroyed buildings.
Reports indicate that the shaking could be felt in high buildings in the capital of Jakarta and was also felt in Singapore and Malaysia.

This is the second earthquake to hit Indonesia in less than a month. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake took 82 lives south of Java on 2 September.
The World Federation is currently working with its agency and is looking into ways to assist.
