‘Knowledge is power’ I hear you quote.

In an ideal society, we would all have equal resources and hence equal chances to grow. Some reach a point whereby they begin to explore their capabilities, while others are limited either by resources or various other constraints. However, with the existential inequalities, it is essential to help cater for these distinct inequalities and slowly work towards a more balanced world.

Yes, it is easier said than done. But you’ve got to start somewhere. Sometimes the fact that it is difficult to alleviate issues works as a stumbling block; we’ve got to look past it, and try work on small ground issues and slowly tackle larger ones.

Reflecting on the quote above, I have found it to be very accurate on many levels. Attaining knowledge in all respects increases wisdom. As you become wiser, your command and abilities become more distinct. Sometimes you begin to explore new talents, and focus on new potentials that you hadn’t witnessed before. Knowledge doesn’t have to be specific to secular; all knowledge can be useful knowledge.

For this reason, I personally feel education to be a pivotal means for an individual to succeed. However, a good education system requires resources to enable steady upward growth. Many individuals around the globe are unable to attend universities because of its high cost and this often constraints their growth and chances of improvement.

To support innovation in education the Bill and Melinda gates foundation are funding a new project, Coursera, which will be an online university which will be providing online courses by some of the top universities in the United States at local community colleges. It will mean that students will have access to content by leading academics – within courses delivered by local staff.

However online courses are readily available to many student who are studying at home. What makes this project stand out? At present students only receive a certificate for successfully completing the course and it is not counted towards a degree. Coursera wants to develop this system and make it validate the identity of students who are studying at home and to use webcams to provide supervised exams.

Therefore at a cost that is likely to be much lower than a traditional campus-based course, students are able to receive a formal accreditation with famous universities and receive a degree once they successfully complete the course.

So is online learning the next BIG thing? It offers students an easier access to education, a more personalised, flexible and customised learning experience. In addition students have the liberty to decide how and when they want to study together with customising their study programs and course structures themselves. For those students who are unable to afford the fees of campus-based universities, online education is a far better option.
