Update on Madaris support and training on GCSE and A Level Qualifications

Updated 16 April 2010

At the madaris consultation held on Saturday 1 August 2009, The World Federation of KSIMC was given a mandate by madaris to support the introduction of the GCSE and A Level qualifications in Islam as per the AQA examination board specification. The World Federation pledged to deliver a number of key actions to help support the madaris through the process, including the organisation of Inset training.

Since then The World Federation has organised successful Inset training sessions as well as a Continuous Personal Development (CPD) on the AS level for teachers from across the UK.

Inset Training
The first Inset training was hosted by Birmingham Jamaat on 10 October 2009.  Over 35 teachers from across UK madaris attended.  The session was chaired by Mulla Mohammed Kassamali of Peterborough.  The training was delivered by Diana Hayden, an AQA Principal Examiner.

Following the success of the Inset Training on GCSE unit 8 in Birmingham, an Inset Day on the AS Level, Units K & L was held on 8 November 2009 in Peterborough.  The day was attended by 14 teachers.  The session was chaired by Mulla Mohammad Kassamali and Shaykh Abbas Ismail.  Diana Hayden also delivered this training where she led the teachers through exam papers, marking schemes and exam techniques.

Chaired by Shaykh Abbas Imsail, Watford hosted an Inset day which provided training on GCSE Unit 9 for madaris teachers.  This training was also delivered by Diana Hayden.

Students were also provided with additional revision courses.  The Islamic Education department organised a full day of GCSE revision and examinations technique training for madressa students taking the GCSE Religious Studies Edexcel Unit D.  This training was specifically held to assist those students who were at the midway point in their Edexcel GCSE’s.  The sessions were held in Watford and conducted by Tabassum Bachoo, a qualified teacher and examiner for Units D & K.  This was the fourth year in which training has taken place centrally and students from Hyderi, Stanmore Sunday and Wessex madaris attended.

Continuous Personal Development
On Saturday 12 December 2009, the department of Islamic Education organised the first AS Level Continuous Personal Development (CPD) course for madrasah teachers. The session was held in North London and was conducted by sister Masuma Jaffer.

The CPD covered mainly the section of the AS Level that focused on teachings related to the Quran. The content was designed to enable the teachers to explore the differences between the various schools of thought in relation to the Quran's compilation, revelation and authority.

Resources
In addition, the Islamic Education department has also provided a manual of notes for the GCSE and has produced a manual of lesson plans and teacher resources that relate to both the GCSE and A Level qualifications.
These teacher resources include lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, handouts and classroom activities. Providing teachers with such support will ensure that teachers feel confident and empowered to be able to spend quality time in the classroom focusing the students' learning to the material and enhancing their moral and religious knowledge.

Conclusion
Since August 2009, the Islamic Education team of The World Federation of KSIMC has been able to support the madaris in several areas including:
  • Publishing a manual of notes for the AQA Unit 8 drafted specifically from a Shia Ithna Asheri perspective
  • Providing Lesson Plans and Teacher Resources to all teachers so that they can successfully and easily begin to teach the GCSE
  • Organising the Inset which was delivered by Diana Hayden, an AQA Principal Examiner
  • Facilitating the application process of a number of teachers that wished to become AQA examiners
  • Providing a draft manual of notes relating to the AS Level Units K and L of AQA
  • Providing Lesson Plans and Teacher Resources to all teachers so that they can successfully and easily begin to teach the AS Level
