It is the country's worst drought in years, and comes after three or four consecutive failed rainy seasons in many areas. Food production has dropped and the price of corn, a staple food, has more than doubled. Supplies have shrunk by nearly 28%.
"Red lights are flashing across the country," said Burkard Oberle, the World Food Program's (WFP) country director in Kenya. "People are already going hungry, malnutrition is preying on more and more young children, cattle are dying. We face a huge challenge."

The Ukambani appeal, which was launched by Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya (BMMK) received an overwhelming response, both from local and international donors. By the Grace of the Almighty, relief food distribution at three Ukambani centres have taken place.
Through the support from Africa Federation, The World Federation and all the well wishers, deserving families were assisted with food items such as green maize, rice and sugar in the months of December 2009 and January 2010. A total of 167 families were assisted and 19,330 Kilograms of food were dispatched.
