Ramadhan Relief 1433:  A month in review

Updated 15 August 2012

The World Federation’s annual Ramadhan Relief Programme is a partnership where everybody wins. From the thousands upon thousands of beneficiaries to the countless volunteers, generous donors, Jamaats, Regional Federations and concerned individuals, this initiative continues to show that united, there is nothing we can’t accomplish.

Whilst the final count is not yet in, the Ramadhan Relief Fund 1433 raised almost $600,000 USD to date. This year (1433/2012), The World Federation distributed about $660,000 USD, its largest sum ever in aid to deserving families grappling with poverty. With the kind and continued support of donors, we hope to achieve our target by the end of the month of Ramadhan.

The following is a glimpse of the many activities in support of Ramadhan Relief that took place during the Glorious and Blessed month of Ramadhan.

AID DISTRIBUTION ACROSS 17 COUNTRIES
Aid in the form of food baskets, Iftaar, cash gifts, debt clearances and healthcare were provided to over 120,000 men, women, children, orphans, widows, seniors and the disabled living in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Haiti, India, Iraq, Kenya, Madagascar, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa, Syria, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen.

• BANGLADESH – Support in the form of cash gifts were provided to women who are cancer patients, widows, and who are affected by local floods.

• INDIA – Food baskets were packaged and distributed to families living in severe poverty in Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. This is an area where little or no aid has reached the local communities from other organisations.

• IRAQ – 1,500 food parcels were purchased, packed and distributed to deserving families in Najaf and Karbala. Each food parcel contained rice (5 kg), kishmish (.5 kg), tomato paste (1 kg), dried lemon (.25 kg), starch (.5 kg), vermicelli (2 packs), chickpeas (1 kg), lentils (1 kg), tea (400 gm), oil (1 litre) and mash lentils (1 kg). As well, 2,000 Sadaat orphan children will receive Eid gifts on Eid day.

• KOLKATA, INDIA – Food ration packets were distributed to needy families living in Kolkata, West Bengal.

• MUMBAI, INDIA – Food baskets were packaged and distributed to Sadaat and non-Sadaat families. Each food parcel contained wheat (8 kg), rice (6 kg), sugar (2 kg), chana lentils (2 kg) and masoor lentils (2 kg).

• MYANMAR – Aid in the form of food baskets and debt clearance were given to Sadaat and non-Sadaat families struggling with poverty.

• SOUTH AFRICA – on the Wilaadat of Imam Hassan (as), an interfaith event was organised where speeches and presentations were made by Shaykh Shaheed Mathee, Shaykh Murtaza Alidina and Rabbi Greg Alexander – ending with Iftaar.

• SRI LANKA – Food parcels were purchased, assembled and distributed to needy families living in Nuwara Eliya and Ampara. Our volunteers travelled 4 hours by car to reach Nuwara Eliya and 5 hours to reach Ampara.

• SYRIA - Countless people have been badly affected by arson and looting in recent weeks. As a result, several families are crammed into one building to an extent that even bathrooms are used for sleeping. Food baskets, cash gifts, and medical care are being provided to these families amid the violence.

• TANZANIA – Iftaar was served to 85 children at a local school for the blind and food parcels were distributed to deserving families.

• UGANDA - Iftaar is being served each night during the month of Ramadhan in a mosque in Eastern Uganda.

CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN CAMPAIGN
The World Federation invited children and youth from around the world to raise awareness and fundraise for the Ramadhan Relief Fund by creating a web page on www.justgiving.com.  To date, 4 participants from the United Kingdom and Canada raised just over $8,000 USD.

DONATE A SANDWICH CAMPAIGN
65 donors from across the world responded to the “Donate a Sandwich Campaign” and raised $6,262 USD for the Ramadhan Relief Fund. By donating the cost of a sandwich, so many more families benefitted from the Ramadhan Relief Programme.

AMMAN YUJEEBO CAMPAIGN
Whilst The World Federation is doing all it can to help the people in Syria during these difficult times, the power of supplication (Du’a) especially in these days and nights of the month of Ramadhan is immeasurable. One of Allah’s names is “Al Mujeeb” – the One who responds to the prayers of the supplicant when he calls upon Him. Individuals from around the world joined our efforts and recite the dua of AMMAN YUJEEBO 69,700 times to help the distraught people of Syria and other regions of the world.
