Updated 20 October 2010
In the midst of turmoil, there is always hope. For almost 3 months now, the people of Pakistan have endured immense hardships brought on by torrential rains and flash floods. Whilst their troubles continue to unfold, The World Federation of KSIMC and Hussaini Foundation volunteers are working hard to bring comfort to thousands of men, women and children.
The following report was prepared on 10 October 2010 and outlines the current situation in Pakistan and the relief efforts carried out:
SOUTH REGION
(1) UPPER SINDH – KASHMORE AND SUKKAR
• There are 1,250 families registered as Internationally Displaced Persons (IDPs)
• Flood victims were rescued via boats and brought to land; they were then taken by vehicles to relief camps where they were immediately served cooked meals and given dry food rations
• Hussaini Foundation is providing logistical support to a local NGO, ‘John Social Welfare’, who has distributed 2,755 tents, 5,510 blankets, 4,000 water containers and 500 sets of utensils and mats
• Food rations were provided to some IDPs who took shelter in cities
• 316 Family Resource Packs (FRPs) were distributed in remote areas of Jesuk and Nausheroferoz
(2) DADU, KHAIRPUR & LARKANA
• 700 families received FRPs (320 families in Dadu, 200 families in Thal/Khairpur, 180 families in Larkana)
• Data collection of the affected families has started. To date, data has been compiled for 90 villages in District Dadu and 40 villages in District Jacobabad. This data will be used by Hussaini Foundation to identify the neediest families who have lost their houses and livestock for the agriculture projects that are being planned
(3) THATTA DISTRICT
• The flood water is still present in this region and is slowly receding; it may take another month or two to flush out
• As the water is receding from the villages the IDPs are returning to their homeland; the most immediate concern on their return will be food and water
• 500 water pumps will be repaired in Sindh - out of which 100 are allocated to District Thatta. 20 hand pumps have been repaired and rest will be done as the flood water is cleared. The cost of one hand pump unit replacement is $325 USD
• The most concerning issue for the villagers is the revival of their agriculture land which has been badly affected; if this concern is not addressed in time, farmers may face serious economic losses and social disorder. Thousands of poor farmers need the support for rehabilitation.
• For example, the cost of helping these farmers start up again are as follows:

RECONSTRUCTION OF MOSQUES & CENTERS
With the month of Muharram coming up, there is an immediate need in the southern region to prepare for the venues to hold Majalis and azadari programmes. To this end the Chief Coordinator of Hussaini Foundation has recommended a needs survey to identify areas of need. To kick-start this project, Rs. 2.5 million has been allocated for the Muharram programme.
