Pakistan Flood Relief:  Second visit to Pakistan shows progress in relief efforts

Updated 16 March 2011

Relief efforts in the aftermath of the great floods are well underway in Pakistan. Between 21st and 24th February 2011, The World Federation of KSIMC President, Dr. Asgar Moledina was accompanied by officials from Hussaini Foundation, The Pakistan Federation and the Past President of Kampala Jamaat, Al-Haj Abbasbhai Lilani to visit the flood affected areas. The purpose of this visit was to assess the reconstruction and rehabilitation projects funded by The World Federation of KSIMC.

Over the course of 4 days, the team covered over 4,100 kilometres visiting over 24 villages and towns across the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa (formerly known as NWFP).

HOUSING PROJECTS
The World Federation of KSIMC has funded a number of housing projects in Pakistan’s flood affected areas. Dr. Moledina reported:  “It is satisfying to note that the construction of over 700 housing units has been completed and another 800 are waiting installation of roofs. Insha’Allah, by the end of March, nearly 1,500 new homes will be available for families to move into. Alhamdulillah, the funds received from donors worldwide have been well utilised and every cent properly used and accounted for. ”

Dr. Moledina added:  “We were moved by the personal stories of the elderly, the widows and orphans who were homeless as a result of the floods. They were without a roof over their head for the past seven months and were so grateful now that they were being offered quality shelters.”

Whilst the current housing projects are in progress, this tragedy is far from over. There are thousands of more people still living in make shift tents or under the open sky. The World Federation of KSIMC has targeted to build 5,200 housing units for the displaced victims and is in dire need of more funds. Let us not forget our brothers and sisters who remain homeless.

It will likely take another 2 to 3 years before all of the displaced families are provided with permanent homes. At this time, it seems that there is a great lack of support from other government and non-government agencies with respect to rehabilitation efforts of the flood affected families.

FARMING INITIATIVES
In addition to the housing projects, The World Federation provided seed money to help local farmers in Pakistan restart their livelihoods that were washed away by the flood waters. Working in cooperation with the Khoja (Pirhai) Shia Isna Asheri Jamaat of Karachi, help was provided to farmers to plant wheat on more than 4,000 acres of land by the end of February 2011. After having visited these farmlands and meeting with the Khoja (Pirhai) Shia Isna Asheri Jamaat (KPSIAJ), Dr. Moledina reported:  “The goal of this initiative was to sow the wheat in time for an April 2011 harvest where sales from this crop would provide income for the farmers helping them to become self sufficient over time. I am completely satisfied with the work that KPSIAJ have undertaken in this regard.
