In response to the appeal of various communities in all our regions to set up a media response team to address the needs and aspirations of our communities worldwide, The World Federation of KSIMC Conference, held in Dar Es Salaam in May 2011, passed a resolution to authorise the Executive Council of The World Federation to form a media sub-committee.
Alhamdulillah, the Media Strategic Sub-Committee team has been formed and will be working together, holding teleconferences on a periodical basis. All members share media stories of interest that are relevant to our goals. The team comprises of members from various regions and have been selected based on their expertise in media related issues:
Br. Munawer Rattansey – Chairman, London UK
Munawer Rattansey has been serving as the Vice President of The World Federation since 2009. He is involved in the External and Media Desk, IIPS Programme along with other duties.
He is working closely with Al Khoie Foundation in several areas including as a member of the Steering Committee of Mosques and Imam Advisory Board(MINAB), as a member of the committee for Protection of Places of Worshiop and Sacred Sites, on the committee for Justice for Bahrain, a member of the Ad hoc committee on the Formation of Shia Organizations, and is also involved with the Hindu Muslim Forum.
Over and above this, he is also involved in various other external causes.
Prior to the current position, Munawer was the President of The Council of European Jamaats for a period of two terms(2005 - 2009). In that position he worked closely with The World Federation to take over projects to be delivered in Europe.He worked closely with the other European Jamaats and was instrumental in CoEJ attaining direct membership of The World Federation.
From 1992 onwards, he was involved in serving at various positions at the managing level in Hyderi Islamic Centre in South London.
Br. Habib M Habib – Vice Chairman, Seattle USA
Habib M. Habib serves as Honorary Secretary General of NASIMCO and was the first elected President of London Jamaat (Hammersmith).He is a featured columnist for Africa Federation Samachar and writes on constitutional and political matters. He has written articles for "Living Islam magazine", The Seattle Times and has been featured in ROSHNI's 2006 edition of "Who is Who" as one of the most prominent South Asians in the USA. A recipient of many awards including International Channel TV Network(2001) International Examiner newspaper(2006) and Northwest Asian Weekly newspaper(1997), Habib was selected for special recognition by U.S.Congressman Jim McDermott (2003) for his activism in community services. He has also steadily held the position as an elected Honorary Treasurer of the Washington State Democratic Party for a number of years.
Br. Barket Walji – London, UK
Barkat Ali Walji is a lecturer in mathematics, researcher in Islamic history and a director of an investment trading company. Along with having worked for CoEJ and The World Federation he is responsible for instigating the campaign, raising awareness and eventually the reversal, of the discriminatory admission policy against Shia Muslims by the first purpose built Islamic school in UK.
Sis. Shyrose Dhalla – Toronto, Canada
Shyrose Jaffer Dhalla holds a master’s degree in education, and also has degrees in psychology and sociology. She is a proactive author, writer, lecturer, and anti-racist educator appearing on TV programs and radio talk shows. She conducts teacher training workshops for educationists in university, school, and madressa settings. She is a Zakira who recites Muharram majalis worldwide in both Urdu and in English. Ahlulbayt TV recently presented Zakira Shyrose with an award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to female public speaking. Her interviews, well-researched social commentaries and columns appear in the Toronto Star, Ja’ffari News, and Federation Samachar.
Br. Munir Daya – Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Munir Daya is a prolific writer in the Tanzania media. He has served on several boards of the Dar es Salaam Jamaat and the Africa Federation in the field of sports, education, and media. He was Editor of Federation Samachar from 1983 to 2004, and resumed this position in 2010 to make the magazine into a strong international publication. Munir is the managing director and franchise owner of Rentokil Initial (Tanzania) Ltd., an agro-chemical, hygiene and pest control service organisation in Tanzania. For several decades, in his well-read weekly column in the Sunday Citizen, Tanzania, Munir candidly discusses and critiques world issues.
Sis. Mahjabeen Daya – Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Mahjabeen Daya is a Ph.D. candidate in postcolonial studies and also has degrees in English and mass communications. She has a strong background in writing and public relations, having worked in the head office of a major Canadian bank, a college in Dubai, a television station in Toronto, and in corporate communications in the Canadian provincial government. She is author of a textbook,“Pakistan: An Islamic Treasure”(1990) and holds the JIBA (Ontario) Professional Woman of the Year Award, 1999. From 1999 to 2005 Mahjabeen was the Editor of Ja’ffari News (Toronto) and in 2010 she was appointed as Associate Editor of Federation Samachar.
Br. Hasnain Walji – Los Angeles, USA
Hasnain Walji, who has served as Secretary General, Vice President and President of The World Federation, is a writer and researcher with special interest in the history of The KSI Community. He has penned hundreds of articles and was the former Editor of Shia World, Shia International and Living Islam magazines. He is currently working on producing a documentary film called "The Khoja - a Journey of. Faith'
