The World Federation of KSIMC would like to welcome back Dr. Munir Datoo to his current role as the Assistant Secretary General for Health for the term 2011-2014.
Dr. Munir Muhsin Datoo was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. He is the fourth in a family of five. His parents, Marhum Muhsin Abdulrasul Datoo and Marhuma Khatija Muhsin were both born in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and his late mother was an internationally renowned Zakira for the ladies. Dr Munir is married and has three children, a girl and two boys. He is settled in London, where he practices as a Doctor in General Practice.
His primary education started in Dar-es-Salaam, and finished in Karachi, where he also completed his secondary education. He went on to study medicine in Karachi and obtained his MBBS in 1986. His internship was at the Muhimbili Hospital in Dar-es-Salaam, after which he migrated to London, UK, in 1988. He has a diploma in ENT from the Royal College of Surgeons and has special interest in Acupuncture. He also teaches fifth year medical students from Imperial College during their general practice rotation.
His communal involvement started as a volunteer at Mehfile Zainab in Karachi in 1973 and then at Mehfil-e-Murtaza (Karachi) in 1978, and was active in the student bodies in the medical school to take on the post of Vice President. He has been a volunteer at Stanmore since 1998, and was the Chairman of the Medical Sub-committee Stanmore for two years until 2004. He was the Sport Secretary of Ithna asheri Union at Stanmore (Now Stanmore Jaffery) in 2000. He was part of Medical Advisory Board of the World Federation and led a team to Karachi in April of 2004 to implement the Strategic planning of the World Federation. He has also represents the World Federation on the British Hajj Delegation. Dr Munir has been going as a volunteer and group doctor with the European Hajj Mission since 2001. He was in the Executive Committee of Hujjat Stanmore for 2 terms 2009/10 and 2010/11.
Dr Munir was first appointed as Assistant Secretary General for Health by Dr Ahmed Hassam in 2007. On accepting the role of ASG for health Dr Munir stated ‘Alhamdulillah I have been able to take the work of Medical Advisory Board forward and am hoping to continue to work towards a healthy community. To enable to deliver the objectives laid down by the WF conference in DSM in May 2011, I will be looking to increase the capacity of the health faction of the WF and will be Inshallah bringing in young health professionals to join the health team.
The health team has worked very hard in the last 18 months to streamline the accountability from the health centres and health projects. We are now able to provide the donors with the breakdown of each penny spent and therefore the term 'penny accounting'. I would like to thank the WF Secretariat in particular Sidika Karim, the secretary for Health for the hard work in achieving this.”
