NGO Development:  Special presentation kindles further growth and opportunities

Updated 19 May 2010

On Sunday 2 May 2010, The World Federation of KSIMC hosted a special presentation on NGO development and fundraising for the benefit of our community organisations. This falls as part of The World Federation NGO agenda to develop and address the development needs of NGOs and charities within our community structures.

Held at the Tableegh Auditorium in Dar es Salaam, the evening drew approximately 45 participants from various organisations such as the Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania, WIPAHS, Medewell, The Desk and Chair Foundation, Nyota Foundation, Al Khoei Foundation of Tanzania and many others. Two presentations were given. The first by Shan-E-Abbas Hassam on the World Federation’s NGO Status which also shed light on the funding opportunities in East Africa. A presentation was also given by the guest speaker Ben Kindoli about the workings of  the Foundation of Civil Society and the funding they give to local NGOs.

The feedback received from those who attended the workshop was very positive and it was agreed that much more can be done in the future.

As a result, attendees requested more information on community development projects including water wells, housing and microfinance and assistance by external organisations in building resources.

NEW TRAINING WORKSHOP
During this event, it was collectively agreed that The World Federation of KSIMC in partnership with The Africa Federation would facilitate future training workshops focussed on NGO development and external fundraising. Several action points were developed to ensure that organisations obtain maximum benefit in the future. To begin the process, a workshop would be organised within the next  four to five months with sessions in areas such as monitoring and evaluation, impact assessments, as identified in the presentation. These training workshops would be provided by the Foundation for Civil Society in Tanzania as well as other civil society organisations. Further resources on areas and organisations from where one can seek funding from will continue to be provided to our organisations by the World Federation.

The World Federation of KSIMC and The Africa Federation have initiated the planning for this new seminar and will announce the details in due course.

Executive Councillor and Deputy Secretary General of The World Federation, Shan-E-Abbas Hassam expressed:  “This presentation showed some of the many opportunities in East Africa for our community institutions. No doubt with the help of Allah (swt) the institutions in Africa will continue to build their capacity to further the work being in done in Tableegh, health, education and economic upliftment. In addition, The World Federation would like to thank Atiya Sumar for her work in organising and co-ordinating this event. As the Africa Federation NGO Co-ordinator, Atiya will continue to be on hand to assist our institutions on the NGO front.”
