Ramadhan Relief 1433:  Sumayya Manji fundraises for hungry children – United Kingdom

Updated 1 August 2012

Amir al-mu'minin (AS) is reported to have said:
"The sustenance of bodies is food, and the sustenance of souls is to make others eat."
(qut al-ajsaad al-ta'aam wa qut al-arwaah al-it'aam)

This Ramadhan, Sumayya Manji from the United Kingdom joined The World Federation’s ‘Children Helping Children” campaign to raise donations and awareness for the annual Ramadhan Relief Fund.  To date, she has raised £286 GBP of her overall target of £500 GBP for Ramadhan Relief – that’s 57% of her goal!

When she first joined, Sumayya wrote to us and said: “I am setting up a Just Giving page to aid children of my age, and younger, all over the world who are more in need. Ramadhan is the month to help people and I feel by helping children, we are helping the future. Fasting in the long summer months always makes me realise how much children in third world countries, who don't even have iftaar to eat, go through in their daily lives. I am already feeling the hunger and it has only been three days of Ramadhan in the UK!”

Sumayya enjoys working for the community and has always been involved in raising money and awareness for charities through different initiatives such as bake sales, street collections and marathons. She also mentors younger children in her community and helps the elderly.

Supporting our youth is something that Sumayya is passionate about and to this end she:

• Was involved with the Department for Education Youth Board for two years – where they made government policies more 'youth-friendly' and engaged youth participation
• Represented the youth board at the United Nations Children's Rights Commission 50th anniversary at St. James' Palace
• Has met many youth ministers and MPs
• Represented Peterborough as an Olympic torchbearer (selected for her volunteer and charity work in her local and wider community)

Sumayya plans to fundraise and create awareness for the children who depend on The World Federation’s Ramadhan Relief Fund by holding local events and involving the younger children in the community. As part of her wider ambition, Sumayya is keen to spend some time in a developing country where she can make a difference through her volunteer efforts.
