Imagine having to rebuild parts of your home, year after year, because of damage caused by rain water and annual floods. The walls of most of the homes in Sri Lanka are built out of wooden planks. When the wood perishes due to moisture, they have to be replaced. Families also have to fill the foundation of their houses with debris and earth to replace additional damage also caused by the water.
This year, in particular, destruction caused to homes by heavy monsoon rains is much more than in previous years, where some houses have even been washed away with the flood waters, leaving families homeless.
STRUGGLING IN SRI LANKA
Life can be very hard for those without access to basic necessities. The current condition of Muslims in Sri Lanka is such that families are finding it very hard to survive. The high cost of living, which escalates on a daily basis, affects their economic, medical and social conditions to a very great extent.
This year, the recent floods have added to their predicament. The waters rose above roof level and left families completely homeless. Most have lost almost all of their belongings. Some left their homes early enough and took some of their meagre precious belongings and important documents with them. Families will need assistance to rebuild their homes.
RAMADHAN RELIEF IN SRI LANKA
This Ramadhan, The World Federation is once again working in partnership with the Az Zahra Association of Sri Lanka to bring relief to the Muslim community there. Some families will receive assistance to rebuild their homes and 200 families will receive:
- Food Parcels
- Household items
- Essential clothing
- Cash gifts
- Clearing of debts
