Ayatullah Sayyid Mujtaba Musavi Lari passes away in Iran
Updated 13 March 2013
After a long illness, the great scholar Ayatullah Sayyid Mujtaba Musavi Lari passed away on 9 March 2013 in Iran. He was aged 77.
Son of the late Ayatulla Sayyid Ali Asghar Lari, Ayatullah Mujtaba Lari was born in 1925 in the city of Lar where he completed his primary education as well as his preliminary Islamic studies. In 1953 he continued his study of the Islamic sciences in Qum.
In 1963, Ayatullah Lari visited Germany for medical treatment. Upon return to Iran, he wrote ‘The Face of Western Civilization’. The book has been reprinted for the seventh time and was translated into English in 1970.
Articles concerning the book appeared in several Western periodicals, and the BBC arranged an interview with the translator in which the reasons for translating the book and the reception it had received in England were discussed. The English version of the book has been printed and reprinted in England, Iran, and America.
Ayatullah Lari was also active in the field of social and humanitarian work. In 1964, he established a charitable organization in Lar to enable Islam to reach young people in rural areas and to help the needy. Students of religious sciences were sent to the countryside to teach Islam to children and young people, providing thousands of school children with clothes, books and writing equipment. A number of mosques, schools and clinics were also built in towns and villages.
In 1974 Ayatullah Lari wrote a series of articles on Islamic ethics which were formed into a book titled The Function of Ethics in Human Development, which has been reprinted six times.
Perhaps his famous books in the west are his series of books on Islamic ideology which can be found in many Muslim homes in the west.
A remarkable characteristic of Ayatullah Lari was that he would send, free of cost, his books to anyone that requested them. His generosity and selfless ethos in Islamic propagation was truly remarkable.
The World Federation has particularly fond memories of interaction with Ayatullah Lari. Whenever a community delegation visited Qum, Ayatullah Lari would meet with them, often at short notice, and provide his personal time to them to answer questions and provide his insight. The students of The World Federation’s short course, Madinah and Bab al-Ilm, would always be granted an audience with this great personality, and he would grant them his precious time in providing advice and guidance. The students would always comment on how humble and welcoming he was to them.
The passing of Sayyid Mujtaba Musavi Lari is a great loss to the Muslim ummah. May Allah elevate his soul and sanctify his spirit, and place him close the Ma’sumeen.
The World Federation requests all mu’mineen to remember him with a Sura Fatiha.
