The President of The World Federation of KSIMC visits BMMK – Mombasa, Kenya

Updated 28 April 2010

During his visit to Mombasa, the President of The World Federation of KSIMC, Dr. Asgar Moledina met with officials of Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya (BMMK) and also visited various BMMK centres.  In addition, Dr. Moledina also met with seniors at Jaffery Club.

On 23 April 2010 Dr. Moledina met with representatives of BMMK.  Among those present were the Chairman Al Haj Abbas H.M. Nasser and Hon. Secretary al Haj Fazle Abbas Bhanji.  Committee members Al Haj Ahmed Dhalla, Al Haji Akber Kassamali, and Al Haj Shamsheer Mawji as well as the Chief Executive Officer Mujtaba Peera were also in attendance.

Dr. Moledina was briefed on the various projects of BMMK.  These projects include:

  • Muballigh Development Programme: The goal of this project is to ensure that current Muballighs receive training and additional upgrading to meet the current demands of the community as well as recruit additional Muballighs who have attended reputable Hawzas and can act as role models and guide community members.
  • Economic Upliftment/Empowerment Scheme:  The Mission has embarked on this scheme in line with the Millennium Development Goals of the UN as well as the needs identified at The World Federation Conference in 2006.
  • Live Goats Project: The mission embarked on a project whereby they provide live goats to individuals to be reared in order to earn a livelihood.
  • Feed a child Project:  It was found that student enrollment in Madressa was declining as children were working on these days to earn money for a meal.  The mission introduced a pilot programme whereby children attending Madressa would receive a nutritious meal for lunch. This has been a success and the mission hopes to continue this project through the assistance of supporters.
  • Future Rural Development Plan: The mission has renovated and rehabilitated eight of its facilities’ due to dilapidated conditions and have built mosques, classrooms and Muallim houses.

After this meeting, Dr. Moledina met with the seniors from Jaffery Club and addressed them on the role and importance of seniors in the community.  He also pointed out the absence of 20-45 year olds in Mombasa and stressed that the Jamaat leaders should take this into consideration during their strategic planning.  This is due to the fact that most who go abroad for additional studies do not return.

On 25 April 2010, Dr. Moledina was accompanied by BMMK officials and visited various Bilal centres in Samburu, Chengoni, and Mackinon Road.

Samburu Prayer Hall
Dr. Moledina visited the public school that has had a long relationship with the BMMK and hosts the annual Husain (as) Day seminar, inviting other schools to participate.

Samburu Center
Dr. Moledina received a warm welcome and was shown the recently renovated mosque, five classrooms, and a newly built Muallim house.  He addressed the Umma and said that there are no barriers in religion.  He urged the students to ensure that they work hard and perform their studies so that they are able to lead a better life.

Chengoni Center
The elders and committee members of the community welcomed Dr. Moledina to the center.  He was shown the recent renovations of the mosque and classrooms, the construction of the 2 new Muallim houses, and the tailoring classroom.  He was also shown the items sold by the ladies as part of the Economic Upliftment scheme.

Mackinnon Road Project
Dr. Moledina was shown the facilities which served as the first center where the Mission commenced Tableegh activities.  He also attended a small function organised by the local Shia brethren in the area.  He was briefed on the history of the center and the center’s activities.  He was also shown the activities of the Economic Upliftment project that has been established in the area.

During his visits to all the centers, Dr. Moledina addressed the members in Kiswahili and emphasized the need for the community to rise to challenges and take a lead in helping themselves.  He promised his full support through the regional federation and through BMMK in the fields of education, economic upliftment, health and sanitation.
