Updated 4 August 2009

As part of the Regional Federation’s commitment to the NGO work agenda at the 10th Executive Council meeting, The Africa Federation appoints Br Murtaza Kanani and Sis Atiya Sumar as NGO coordinators representing the region to the NGO Working Team. The objective of this team is to ensure the Work Plan that was approved at the 10th Executive Council for the term 2009-2011 is delivered appropriately.

A BRIEF PROFILE OF THE COORDINATORS
Br. Murtaza Kanani graduated in 1996 from the University of Wales Aberystwyth, UK, with a BSc in Accounting and Finance. He then worked with KPMG, one of the largest professional service firms for 4 years from 1996 to 2000. He is currently residing in Nairobi, Kenya running a travel management company. Br Murtaza’s voluntary profile shows that he was the Honorary Treasurer for Nairobi Jamaat from 2002-2003, and was then appointed as the Assistant Honorary Treasurer for The Africa Federation from 2003-2004. Since 2004, Br Murtaza has been serving as the Honorary Treasurer for The Africa Federation.

Sis Atiya Sumar graduated from the Robert Kennedy College, Switzerland with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Applied Leadership. Since April 2008 she has been working as the Assistant to the Executive Director for The Foundation for Civil Society, an organisation that provides grants and capacity building support to civil society organisations. Previously, between 2006 and 2007, Sis Atiya worked for the KSIJ-Central Board of Education in the roles of head of Marketing and Event Management and Assistant Operations Manager.

Br Shan-E-Abbas Hassam, Assistant Secretary General for Relief and Economic Development, said:  "We are busily working on gaining co-ordinators / representatives from the various regions which will help us deliver the Work Plan, which has been signed off by the Executive Council. So far, our NGO work has mainly been to do with expanding our networks, getting to know other NGOs and government organisations and codifying many of our policies. There is much work that can be done at the Regional level including lobbying, external work together with assistance with gathering data on our community's humanitarian projects and evaluating the impact of our community's work. Let us pray to Allah (SWT) to guide us with this work and to grant the community's NGO team tawfeeq to serve in His way."

Imran Janmohamed, The World Federation NGO Manager, said:  “I would like to congratulate both of the coordinators on their secondment as NGO coordinators representing The Africa Federation. Inshallah we will be able to use our collective expertise to maximise the potential of the NGO status with the United Nation’s Economic and Social Council for the betterment of the community and society.”
