The World Federation established the Zainabiya Health Centre in Bangalore in April 1996 to provide basic health care to its inhabitants. In addition to this, health education is provided to teach the people fundamental preventative measures as well as the concepts of immunization, family planning and maternity care.
The Zainabiya Health Centre is located just outside Bangalore in the slums of Neelsandra where over 100,000 people live in abject poverty and gross deprivation. The majority of the inhabitants in this area are Muslims, of which most are Shias. These individuals lack basic facilities like housing and sanitation.
The World Federation recently purchased an auto analyser that was jointly funded by Pharmaco UK and a private donor. The auto analyser will enable patients’ blood to be tested at the centre, rather than having to send the blood to another location. This will not only enable prompt treatment for patients, but also generate revenue for the Centre.
The Zainabiya Health Centre is run by the Imamia Education & Welfare Trust under the leadership of Dr. Mirza Sajjad Hussain, who is the Trustee and Chairman of the Medical Sub-Committee.
The total number of patients seen by Zainabiya Health Centre between April 2007 and March 2008 was 2,560 of which 65% were given free treatment.
The World Federation’s Assistant Secretary General for Health, Dr. Munir M Datoo, commented, “The work carried out by Zainabiya Health Centre in Bangalore is excellent and we hope this new machine will streamline the treatment received by the patients at the centre.”
