HIB Voluntary Summer Project in East Africa - 2010

Updated 15 March 2010

Following the success of the first CoEJ East Africa Trip in 2009, a second trip has been planned for Summer 2010.

As before, a group of volunteers aged eighteen-plus, both male and female, will spend three weeks in Kibaha, Tanzania, volunteering at schools, orphanages and hospitals. They will have an opportunity to interact with individuals from vastly different backgrounds to their own and understand the realities of their lives.

Posters and leaflets advertising the trip were distributed to centres around UK and Europe in December 2009 and potential applicants were invited to visit the website and apply online, giving brief details of their backgrounds and the areas in which they wished to specialise. All applicants demonstrated a genuine passion in volunteering abroad and we were fortunate to be able to fill all ten places by the deadline.

The group will leave for Dar es Salaam in mid-July and return in the first week of August. Whilst in Kibaha, they will be accommodated on-site, giving them the opportunity to assist during lesson time throughout the day. In the evenings they will be utilising their time bonding and building relationships with students and learn about their backgrounds and aspirations.

As yet, the group have not met each other. A seminar is scheduled for 10 April 2010 and this will be an opportunity for them to become acquainted with each other, learn more about the trip and have any questions answered by the seminar co-ordinators. They will also be asked to try and fundraise in order that donations can be made to the various institutions that will be visited during the course of the trip, including rural orphanages and a cancer hospital.

It is hoped that the volunteers will return from Kibaha with a new outlook on life and that they will try to maintain their relationships with the people they will meet and the institutions they will work at.
